Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Educator Resources - California Career Resources Network

Career Planning

The California Career Resource Network (CalCRN) is a state agency dedicated to helping all Californians reach their career goals.

The CalCRN website is for students, counselors, parents, teachers, in short, anyone interested in developing the career self-management skills necessary in today's world of work.  The primary duty of CalCRN is to distribute career information, resources, and training materials to middle and high school counselors, educators, and administrators, to ensure middle and high schools have the necessary information to provide pupils with guidance and instruction on education and job requirements necessary for career development.  A video introduction of the site is available.

To develop a quality ICT workforce, we need to attract and interact with students early in their educational careers, to let them know about job and career opportunities in ICT, and to help them find appropriate educational opportunities.  To do that, we need to reach out to students and their families and help guidance counselors.  CalCRN has valuable resources for that.  Direct people to them!

CalCRN provides:

·         Career exploration and planning tools and self-assessments

·         Methods of meeting educational and training needs

·         Labor market and career opportunity information

The CalCRN website is organized into sections for students, educators, and job and career seekers.

The Students section includes:

·         Roadtrip Nation, a television show in which young people travel and interview workers with various occupations.

·         WhoDoUWant2B, an online quiz and game designed to help high school students become aware of career opportunities.

·         Job Search Engines, a directory of youth-oriented job search websites.

·         Online Student Resources, a  career planning and information website directory.

·         California Reality Check, a web-based tool to calculate and demonstrate the cost of living in California, compared with earnings available in various careers

·      California Career Planning Guide, a PDF or printed tool for planning a career development with a video introduction

·      Find and Get the Right Job, a PDF guide for self-assessment, job searching, contacting and interviewing successfully with employers

Succeed at Work (PDF), a PDF guide for how to start and manage a successful working life

In addition to general resources and many of the resources listed above in the Students section, the Educators section provides a directory of Online Educator Resources with links to career assessments and guides for career counselors.

In addition to general resources and other resources listed above, the Job and Career Seekers section contains a directory of Work/Life Balance resources.

General career resources appear in the two sections

General Resources

Where Do I Start? guides users through the career resources available via the CalCRN website.

California Career Zone provides a self assessment tool that helps students see how their personalities and interests correlate with potential careers.  Profiles of different occupations organized by industry sector and a “Reality Check” tool to see which occupations will support students’ desired lifestyles are also available.
